74.3 miles per Gallon!

I was reading this article about the new Polo Bluemotion in Europe and its amazing gas mileage of 74.3 miles per gallon and found it interesting that the National Petroleum Council (NPC) in the UK warns that oil production may well become "a significant challenge as early as 2015". That's before my daughter enters College. Things are going to change drastically in the next few years and VW will be well positioned with their Diesel technology and Diesel hybrids with their new fuel cell in the near future. I wouldn't be surprised 100 miles/gallon is possible.

New eco-friendly Polo to be road tax exempt

New eco-friendly Polo to be road tax exempt Volkswagen's new Polo Bluemotion will be road tax-exempt because of its low carbon emissions.

The car - which goes on sale in the UK in October - is a diesel but emits only 99 grams per kilometer of CO2, putting it in the tax-free category.

The low emissions are achieved by a super-efficient engine and aerodynamic design that make it the cleanest car on the market, outperforming even hybrid vehicles.

The engine also features a diesel particulate filter (DPF) which helps to reduce other harmful emissions.

The Bluemotion returns 74.3 miles per gallon and there is also a display feature that can provide drivers with fuel consumption statistics. It is hoped that savings on tax and fuel will help encourage drivers to pick a greener car as a new report announces that oil and gas could run out within the next eight years if fuel consumption habits do not change.

The research by the National Petroleum Council (NPC) warns that oil production may well become "a significant challenge as early as 2015". In the report, the NPC calls for immediate policy change to increase the fuel efficiency of cars and for measures to "set an effective cost for emitting carbon dioxide".
